Is abdominal fur loss normal for a middle aged cat?

by andy on November 30, 2009

I have an 8 y/o white spayed female DSH. I took her to the vet this summer for a normal check up and annual shot; the vet checked her belly among other things and all checked out fine. The only thing I needed to do was put her on a weight loss diet. At that time, I also changed her food to stop the puking. She is now on Purina Naturals and the puking is minimal. However in the past few months (long after change of food) I’ve noticed the fur on her belly around her nipples is thinning and I see pink skin (her natural skin color). She is not allowed to roam and does not show evidence of fleas.

Is this hair loss normal?

No, it’s not normal. It could be a reaction to the new food, or it could be something else such as fleas, mites, ringworm, a skin infection, illness, etc.

I have a female like that. She over-grooms her belly area, and has licked it clean of fur. The vet has checked, and there is nothing wrong, although there are some red areas. And because she is spayed, she has lost a bit of muscle tone in that area, so it can sag a bit but she is not overweight.
